The Adopt-a-School program provides substantial and sustained arts programs for children in New Jersey’s public schools that have little or no arts education programming. Through the generous support of corporations, foundations, local businesses and individuals, this program launched in the fall of 2006 and has expanded since then to reach more students every year.
Businesses and foundations have agreed to find programs in schools with the understanding that visibility for the school/business relationship will be promoted through the district, school, and community. As part of fostering this relationship, the following events are typically suggested for each school to build recognition for their sponsor. Schools may choose to:
“It is only through your (Young Audiences) leadership…that our students are being given the opportunity to exercise self-expression in the most positive and creative ways. Your work is making a difference in these young people’s lives.”
Raymond Broach, Interim Superintendent, Trenton School District
“The variety of YANJ programming addresses multiple intelligences of our students and often marries seemingly discordant disciplines, as in the case of the SPECTRUM math program, that shows students how to construct artistic sculptures based on the mathematics of geometry.”
Olga Dytyniak, teacher, Mott Elementary School
“Seeing the arts in person, and being able to interact with artists and ask questions adds a dimension that does not exist on the TV screen. The students are able to activate prior knowledge and make connections with arts they may never know existed, and so their worlds are greatly expanded.”
Elizabeth Martin, teacher
During the 2011-2012 school year, YANJ’s Adopt-a-School program served over 10,000 public elementary and middle school students in 25 schools
